Model Description:

The 1979 Trans Am featured a completely revamped front end design, with a new beak that tilted the nose back at a 22-degree angle, improving aerodynamics over the previous 16-degree angle seen in the “Batmobile” design. The front end also became a “bottom breather,” directing fresh air through the bumper grilles and underneath the front bumper for cooling. The traditional grille between the headlamps was replaced by a pair mounted in the bumper pad extensions, and the grille was finished in matte black with the turn signal/park lamp lenses positioned in the upper outer corners.

Additionally, the front spoiler was redesigned and now made from a flexible material, making it more resistant to damage from curb stones and parking lot dips. The larger wheel air deflectors blended seamlessly with the new spoiler. The rear received a dramatic change with tail lamp assemblies that stretched from corner to corner, incorporating a hinged fuel filler door. These new blacked-out tail lights were a cool new feature for the ’79 model, adding a sleek, aggressive look that still shines today.

Exterior:

The Cameo White exterior of this Trans Am is in great driver condition. As you can see in the photos, the finish has a terrific gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. The doors open and shut easily, and the front end, often prone to chips, is in great shape. The front spoiler, low and vulnerable to damage, remains in excellent condition. The YJ8 snowflake wheels and center caps are in beautiful condition, with a brilliant finish and no curb rash. The raised white letter tires are sized 225/70R15 and have about 90% tread left.

There are some rock chips on the left front corner of the hood that have been touched up, as well as some minor blemishes that were too small to photograph. However, these are barely noticeable from about five or ten feet away. The underside of the car is exceptionally clean, with photos provided of the rear spring mounts, rockers, lower quarter panels, and the areas most prone to rust to demonstrate the great condition of the car.

The car also has a radiator core support stamping, marked with “10 30 78” (October 30, 1978), which is correct and original, given that the car’s build date is the first week of December 1978 (12A). This is a great indicator that the car has not been involved in any major front-end collisions.

Window Date Codes:

All of the glass on this Trans Am is date coded and original, with each piece predating the car’s body build date of the first week of December, 1978 (12A). Original glass indicates that the car has had no major accident history and has not sustained significant damage.

  • Driver’s Window – YJ – Made in October 1978.
  • Passenger Window – NG – Made in January 1977.
  • Rear Window – CJ – Made in November 1978.

Interior:

The black vinyl interior of this Trans Am is in amazing original condition. The seats look just as good in person as they do in the photos, showing no split seams, rips, or excessive wear. The bolster on the driver’s seat, a common wear spot, is not overly worn. The gauge faces are crisp and clean, with crystal clear lenses. The carpet is in great condition with no stains, including the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The headliner is in excellent shape with no sagging, warping, or tears.

The original dash is in good condition, with no fading or sun damage. There are a couple of small blemishes on the passenger side of the dash, visible in the photos. The door panels are in excellent shape, and the door pulls are solid and intact. The package tray is also in great condition, with no fading or warping. This Trans Am has never been smoked in, with no burn marks or lingering cigarette smell.

Additionally, both seat belts work and retract properly, a small but important detail that many buyers overlook. Trans Am interiors from this era are known for not wearing well, and the excellent condition of this interior is a testament to the car’s meticulous care throughout its life.

Mechanical:

This Trans Am is in great mechanical condition. The original 403ci engine starts right up every time, runs well, and idles smoothly. The car drives great, handling highway speeds effortlessly. There are no vibrations or strange noises, and the car performs well overall. The brakes do not pull to one side, and the transmission shifts smoothly through the power band. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving, and the car runs cool without overheating. The engine compartment is beautifully clean and well-detailed.

The horn works, as do all the exterior lights, interior lights, wipers, and gauges (except for the oil pressure gauge and clock). The blower for the heater and A/C works on all speeds, and the A/C blows cold. The car is equipped with a true dual exhaust and no catalytic converter, providing a healthy exhaust note.
